Remove Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer from Democratic leadership. The 250th anniversary of this country is being handed over to a partisan rally operation, and congressional Democrats have done nothing to stop it. Trump turned the National Mall into a campaign event, the U.S. Mint is stamping his face on a commemorative gold coin, and a quarter of Democrats say they won't even celebrate Independence Day this year. That is a leadership failure.
When Yale historian Beverly Gage says "the very idea of celebrating has become political and partisan," that's an indictment of everyone who let it happen without a fight. Jeffries and Schumer have had the tools to push back and have not used them. Bucks County — a county Trump won by fewer than 300 votes out of 400,000 cast — is a perfect example of what's at stake. Democrats are demoralized and disengaged while Republicans celebrate. That gap doesn't close without leaders willing to actually lead.
This moment demands urgency and courage. Step aside and make room for someone who will meet it.
