Pass meaningful AI regulation that protects workers from displacement before this trend becomes a crisis. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data is already flashing warning signs: customer service representatives lost 130,180 jobs in the year ending May 2025, a 4.8% drop. Across the 18 occupations BLS flagged as AI-exposed, employment fell 1.6% while overall employment grew 0.8%. Workers are falling behind, and Congress has done nothing.
The jobs disappearing aren't abstract — they're paralegals, graphic designers, technical writers, and administrative professionals. These are skilled careers that took years to build and support middle-class families. The argument that AI will generate better replacement jobs doesn't hold up when the replacement work is fixing broken AI outputs. That's not a talent pipeline. That's a dead end.
Require companies deploying AI at scale to demonstrate workforce transition plans, fund retraining programs tied to the specific occupations BLS has identified as at risk, and establish accountability mechanisms before more workers are left behind. The data exists. The trend is clear. Act on it.
