Rein in Corporate Welfare and call out conflicts of interest

To: Sen. Luján, Rep. Vasquez, Sen. Heinrich

From: A constituent in Alamogordo, NM

February 5

Rein in Musk's Dismantling of USAID for Personal Interests Elon Musk's dismantling of USAID is a reckless and self-serving action that will undoubtedly lead to preventable loss of life on a massive scale. Reports indicate Musk had a clear conflict of interest, as USAID's inspector general was investigating his company Starlink's involvement in Ukraine around the time the aid agency was gutted. It seems Musk singled out USAID not due to any principled opposition, but to protect his own business interests. This naked power grab is an autocratic overreach that directly undermines American sovereignty and democratic accountability. Musk is unfit for the position he has been granted, as evidenced by his xenophobic ideologies and willingness to hamstring humanitarian efforts for personal gain. Shuttering USAID will create a vacuum in the global aid sector and uproot lives, all to insulate Musk's companies from scrutiny. Urgent action must be taken to rein in Musk's abuses of power and restore USAID's critical work before unconscionable damage is done. Musk has proven himself untrustworthy and his coup jeopardizes lives worldwide in service of his own greed and conflicts of interest. This injustice cannot be allowed to stand. We’re paying taxes, yet the billionaires aren’t. Meanwhile, they want to take what little we have left. Why aren’t we looking into corporate welfare? In the United States, it costs taxpayers billions each year, with estimates ranging from $92 billion to $100 billion annually. Meanwhile, USAID costs only $40 billion. Hmmm… doesn’t add up. Elon Musk’s companies—Tesla and SpaceX—have received billions in government contracts and subsidies. Yet, this issue is largely ignored. Isn’t it time we started holding corporations accountable for the massive burden they place on taxpayers?
