I urge you to cosponsor and vote in favor of H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2023. This important legislation would repeal the unfair Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) from the Social Security system. The GPO and WEP reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for many public sector retirees, including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other government workers. These provisions penalize individuals who dedicated their careers to public service, despite having earned their full Social Security benefits through other employment. Repealing the GPO and WEP would ensure these public servants receive the Social Security benefits they have rightfully earned and paid for. There is widespread bipartisan support for eliminating these outdated and unjust offsets. Passing H.R. 82 would provide financial relief to over 2 million Americans negatively impacted by the GPO and WEP, including many of your own constituents. This common-sense reform promotes fairness and protects the hard-earned retirement security of our public workforce. I strongly urge you to cosponsor and actively work to pass H.R. 82 to finally repeal the GPO and WEP provisions that unfairly reduce or deny Social Security benefits to millions of Americans. These dedicated public servants deserve to receive their full earned benefits after a lifetime of work and contributions to our communities.
