Urgent: Prevent an unconstitutional war in Cuba

To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Houlahan

From: A constituent in West Chester, PA

May 18

Today I’m writing to urge you to Co-sponsor and support the Prevent an Unconstitutional War in Cuba Act. Any military action against Cuba must require a formal declaration of war from Congress — that is not a procedural nicety, it is the Constitution. The executive branch does not get to launch a war unilaterally, and as my representative you should be on record saying so. In the case of Cuba, we could have had a peaceful resolution to decades of isolation for Cuba, but once again it appears that Trump nixed the peaceful opening up of Cuba, because neither he not Marco Rubio stand to make a profit or consolidate their personal power with a peaceful solution. Meanwhile innocent people are suffering in Cuba. It is not legal to blockade another country and deny them access to fuel and needed food and supplies. Our country’s standing is being ruined by the Trump administration’s reckless domestic and foreign policies which prioritize profits for billionaires and suffering for everyone else. The stakes here are real. Military conflict with Cuba would put American lives at risk, destabilize the region, and set a precedent that Congress has no meaningful role in decisions of war and peace. This bill is a direct assertion of congressional authority, and voting against it — or simply ignoring it — is a vote to surrender that authority to the White House indefinitely. Please co-sponsor this legislation and push for a floor vote. We must not give up any chance for Congress to re-assert control over any illegal and rash actions by this administration. Thank you.
