This week, Congress will vote on the budget approved last week by the US Senate. I’m sure you are aware of the proposed budget. Here is what your constituents would like you to keep in mind as you cast your vote.
The budget resolution calls for $2 trillion in deeply harmful cuts through 2034 in programs and services directed toward families and communities. These cuts include cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and student loans. These are investments in our communities for health care, nutrition assistance, education, and manufacturing. Investments that benefit all traded for tax giveaways for wealthy. The bottom line here is that this budget is proposing to cut more from programs that are designed to help families and communities just to turn around and give that money to the wealthiest. Myself, and my neighbors are expected to pay more tax than the wealthiest in our country so that we, the people who need these programs, can receive LESS. In what world does this make any sense? It makes sense to the top 1%. It benefits them, and they contribute to your campaigns, sending the message that your loyalty is to the money the wealthy feed you and not to the constituents that you represent and serve. House Republicans are putting billionaires over families. Over your constituents, your friends and neighbors.
This country is relying on you to make the right choice. Last week, our Republican friends in the Senate voted that they believe billionaires should get another tax break. Billionaires! That is the last thing that this country needs. We need to not be saddled with debt after a medical emergency. We need increased funding to our public schools. We need to not spend our entire lives paying back student loans. We need to make sure that everyone has enough to eat. We need to make sure that our schools are safe from mass shooters. Don’t cut programs designed to help and protect the majority in order to increase the wealth of the already wealthy.
