Demand Accountability for Politically Motivated Denial of Disaster Aid I’m writing to demand accountability for what appears to be a politically motivated pattern in how the Trump administration is approving and denying federal disaster aid. On Friday, Trump denied $227 million in disaster aid requests from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island for recovery from February’s major blizzard. All four states had documented damage well above FEMA’s qualifying threshold — New Jersey’s validated damage was roughly $84.4 million against an $18.5 million threshold. Two days earlier, Trump approved FEMA disaster aid for six Republican-led states while publicly praising GOP officials in those states. A White House spokesperson has denied any politicization, saying the administration applies a more “rigorous review.” This is not an isolated incident. Reporting has shown that this term, Trump has approved 89% of disaster aid requests from states with Republican governors and senators, compared to just 23% from states with Democratic governors and senators. He has also denied disaster relief to Vermont, Illinois, Maryland, Colorado, and California, even as aid continued to flow to states that supported him politically. Disaster aid is meant to help Americans recover from real damage, not to reward or punish states based on how they voted. When federal emergency assistance appears to hinge on party affiliation, it undermines public trust in the entire system and leaves real people without help they are entitled to. I’m asking you to: 1. Publicly demand an explanation from the administration for the disparity in disaster aid approvals between Democratic- and Republican-led states. 2. Support congressional oversight, including document requests and hearings, into how disaster declaration decisions are being made. 3. Push for legislation that would require clear, objective, and enforceable criteria for disaster declarations to prevent political interference regardless of who holds the presidency. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your response.
