Investigate Taylor Farms' Donations and FDA's Handling of the Cyclospora Outbreak

To: Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

July 21

Launch a formal investigation into the relationship between Taylor Farms and the Trump administration. The timeline here is damning: Taylor Farms donated $1 million to Trump's preferred super PAC in March 2025, days after the FDA delayed its Food Traceability Rule. Thousands of Americans in Michigan, Ohio, and beyond are now sick with cyclosporiasis, and the outbreak traces directly back to Taylor Farms' shredded iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. What followed the outbreak makes it worse. Taylor Farms hired a former Trump White House official for crisis communications, executives met privately with White House and FDA officials to challenge the government's own findings, and DOGE cut the monitoring programs that would have caught this sooner. The FDA confirmed the epidemiological data still supports the voluntary recall, yet Taylor Farms publicly claimed the agency apologized and cleared their product entirely. That is not a miscommunication. That is a company using political access to rewrite a public health investigation. Americans deserve to know whether a $1 million donation bought Taylor Farms protection from accountability while people got sick. Subpoena the communications between Taylor Farms executives and White House and FDA officials. This is exactly what congressional oversight exists to do.
