No Nickel Refinery
To: Rep. Carter
From: A verified voter in Richmond Hill, GA
February 3
Dear Representative Carter, I am writing as a concerned constituent regarding the proposed Westwin nickel refinery in Bryan County and its potential risks to public health, the environment, and our coastal economy. Nickel refinery dust is classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Group A human carcinogen, raising serious concerns about air quality and long-term health impacts. In addition, project plans include the daily transport of contaminated water to an undisclosed facility, as well as shipment through the Port of Savannah, introducing further environmental and public safety risks. The proposed site is located in a region highly vulnerable to hurricanes and flooding, yet no clear emergency response or mitigation plan has been presented to address these foreseeable hazards. A storm-related incident or industrial accident could affect not only Bryan County, but also neighboring communities, the Ogeechee River watershed, sensitive salt marsh ecosystems, and property values that rely on a healthy coastal environment. I respectfully urge your attention to this matter and ask for your support of a careful, transparent review process that prioritizes public health and long-term environmental protection. Thank you for your time and consideration.
