Oppose ICE Funding in Upcoming Senate Appropriations Bills

To: Sen. Fetterman, Sen. McCormick

From: A verified voter in Middletown, PA

January 25

I am writing as a concerned constituent of Pennsylvania to urge you to oppose any funding bill that allocates additional taxpayer money to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as currently proposed in the Senate. Our nation must uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of every person on American soil — citizens and non-citizens alike. The current actions and use of force by ICE and related federal agents represent a gross violation of those principles. The Fifth Amendment guarantees due process to every person in the United States, regardless of immigration status. This is not optional or negotiable — it is fundamental to our system of justice. Recent events in Minneapolis have laid bare how federal immigration enforcement is operating outside those constitutional boundaries. In just a few weeks, multiple civilians — including U.S. citizens — have been shot and killed in the streets during federal immigration operations. The killing of Renée Good, an American citizen who was acting as a legal observer, by an ICE agent on January 7, was an atrocity that should horrify every defender of civil rights. For too long, lethal encounters involving federal agents have been justified with vague claims of self-defense, despite video evidence and local official statements that raise serious questions about what actually occurred. Most recently, the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti — a U.S. citizen who was filming and actively attempting to protect others — has further galvanized public outrage and demands for accountability. These are not isolated incidents; they are part of a pattern of enforcement that prioritizes militarized tactics over constitutional protections and human life. I strongly urge you to use your power and voice in the Senate to: 1. VOTE NO on any funding package that includes additional funds for ICE without meaningful reform — including clear guardrails, independent oversight, constitutional limits on the use of force, and accountability mechanisms. 2. Support constitutional due process for all people on U.S. soil, as guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment. 3. Demand transparency and federal cooperation with state and local investigations into these fatal encounters rather than shielding federal agents from scrutiny. As our elected representative, you have the responsibility to ensure federal agencies operate under the rule of law and with respect for human rights. Funding an agency that has repeatedly demonstrated excessive force and a lack of accountability sends the wrong message about American values and undermines public trust in government. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your leadership and response.
