Pass meaningful campaign finance reform and work to overturn Citizens United before our elections become a permanent auction. According to a new Public Citizen analysis, just 515 donors have contributed 73% of all super PAC funding this election cycle. One person, Elon Musk, alone accounts for 10% of the $4.2 billion super PACs have raised, after pouring nearly $300 million into the 2024 elections as well.
This is not democracy. It is a system where a handful of billionaires and corporations buy outcomes while the rest of us watch. Public Citizen's Lisa Gilbert put it plainly: "When 500 donors account for more than 70% of super PAC contributions, we should be asking whose voices our political system is prioritizing." More than 85% of super PAC money came from donors who gave at least $20,000, nearly a quarter of the median household income. Most Americans could not fathom that number.
Citizens United opened this floodgate in 2010, and every election since has made it worse. Legislation to cap outside spending, require full donor disclosure, and restore limits on corporate political spending is not a partisan wish. It is the basic condition for a government that answers to voters. Act on it.
