Support Regulation to Protect American Workers from AI Job Displacement

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

February 23

I am writing to urge you to support legislation that establishes meaningful limits and regulations on artificial intelligence replacing American workers. The scale of AI-driven job displacement has reached crisis levels, and immediate action is needed to protect constituents in your district. According to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, AI was responsible for nearly 55,000 layoffs in the United States in 2025. Total job cuts reached 1.17 million, the highest level since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In November 2025 alone, over 6,000 workers lost their jobs specifically due to AI implementation. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology study found that AI can already perform the work of 11.7% of the U.S. labor market and could eliminate $1.2 trillion in wages across finance, healthcare, and professional services. Major corporations are using AI as a cost-cutting tool rather than investing in their workforce. Amazon cut 14,000 corporate roles in October to invest in AI. Microsoft eliminated approximately 15,000 jobs through 2025, with CEO Satya Nadella describing the shift from a "software factory to an intelligence engine." Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff confirmed that 4,000 customer support workers were replaced by AI, reducing headcount from 9,000 to 5,000. CrowdStrike laid off 500 employees, with CEO George Kurtz stating that "AI flattens our hiring curve." These are not abstract statistics. These are families losing income, health insurance, and economic stability while corporations report record profits. Workers who built these companies are being discarded for marginal cost savings. I urge you to champion legislation that requires companies to demonstrate that AI implementation serves genuine business necessity rather than simple cost reduction, mandates retraining programs for displaced workers, and establishes transition periods before AI can replace human employees. American workers deserve protection from unchecked automation that prioritizes corporate profits over community welfare.
