Today we saw another instance of masked alleged ICE agents detaining an elected official. My understanding is that had NYC Controller Lander resisted the plainclothes, nondescript men not believing them to be who they say they were, he would have been in legal trouble. We need law enforcement to properly identify themselves outside of certain sensitive operations in order to have 1. Timely legal recourse for people less privileged than Controller Lander and Senator Padilla to avoid unlawful detainment, and 2. Accountability for actual law enforcement bad actors who kidnap innocent people or handcuff officials trying to perform legitimate oversight duties.
