Urgent Action Needed to Prevent Catastrophic Global Warming

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

November 16, 2025

I am writing to express my deep concern about the current trajectory of global warming and to urge you to take immediate, decisive action to address this crisis. Recent scientific reports indicate that we are on track for 2.3 to 2.5 degrees Celsius of warming this century, with a possibility of reaching a catastrophic 2.8 degrees. This far exceeds the 1.5-degree limit agreed upon in the Paris Agreement, which is now considered out of reach. The consequences of inaction are dire. We have already experienced approximately 1.4 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels, and scientists warn that surpassing 2 degrees could trigger irreversible tipping points in our climate system. A 3-degree warmer world would bring devastating sea level rise, more extreme weather events, loss of mountain glaciers, and destabilization of ice sheets. These impacts are not distant threats – they are occurring earlier and more severely than previously predicted. As your constituent, I implore you to champion aggressive climate legislation that will significantly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We need policies that rapidly transition our energy systems to renewable sources, improve energy efficiency across all sectors, and support climate-resilient infrastructure. Additionally, we must increase our support for developing countries, which are particularly vulnerable to climate impacts. Time is of the essence. Every fraction of a degree matters, and the decisions we make now will determine the livability of our planet for generations to come. Scientists emphasize that even 2 to 3 degrees of warming is extremely dangerous and not considered sustainable for human civilization. While progress has been made in reducing projected warming, it is not enough. We need bold, transformative action to prevent catastrophic outcomes. I urge you to make climate change your top priority and to push for the most ambitious climate policies possible in every piece of legislation that comes before you. Our future depends on the choices we make today. Please act with the urgency this crisis demands.
