I am writing to urge you to support full restoration of funding to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and to cosponsor Senator Catherine Cortez Masto's Stop the Scammers Act (S. 2429). The recent 45% funding cut to the CFPB threatens to shut down the only federal agency dedicated to protecting consumers from financial fraud and predatory practices.
Since its creation, the CFPB has returned billions of dollars to consumers who were cheated by financial institutions. Without adequate funding, the agency cannot respond to consumer complaints, investigate fraud, or provide assistance to service members facing financial exploitation. This leaves ordinary Americans vulnerable to scams and predatory lending while Wall Street operates without meaningful oversight.
The consequences of an underfunded CFPB fall hardest on working families who lack the resources to fight back against fraudulent financial practices. When consumers have nowhere to turn for help with unfair credit card fees, deceptive mortgage terms, or student loan servicer abuses, they bear the full cost of corporate misconduct. The CFPB serves as an essential check on an industry that has repeatedly demonstrated it will prioritize profits over consumer protection when left unregulated.
The Stop the Scammers Act would strengthen the CFPB's ability to protect consumers from financial fraud. This legislation represents a critical step toward ensuring that the agency can fulfill its mission of holding financial institutions accountable and providing recourse for harmed consumers.
I ask that you publicly support full restoration of CFPB funding and cosponsor S. 2429. Constituents need to know that their elected representatives prioritize consumer protection over the interests of financial institutions that profit from fraud and deception. The CFPB's work directly impacts the financial security of families in your district, and its continued operation depends on adequate funding and strong legislative support.
