The Trump administration’s proposed plan for Ukraine is unacceptable in every way. This plan, which would force Ukraine to make significant concessions to Russia, including the surrender of the Donbas region, is not only unjust but also threatens the security of Europe and undermines America's credibility on the world stage.
The US has a moral and legal obligation to stand with Ukraine. In 1994, we signed security agreements when Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons. We must honor these commitments. The proposed plan, which would require Ukraine to shrink its army and forgo NATO membership, directly contradicts our promises and leaves Ukraine vulnerable to further Russian aggression.
Putin's actions in Ukraine are part of a broader pattern of aggression that extends to other European nations, including Poland and Lithuania. If we capitulate now, we send a dangerous message that emboldens further Russian expansionist ambitions and puts our NATO allies at risk.
The plan's development, orchestrated by Putin's envoy and a US representative without input from Ukraine or our European allies, disregards the sovereignty of Ukraine and the collective security interests of our European partners. The pushback from European leaders, who have called this proposal "absurd" and tantamount to "capitulation," should not be ignored.
I urge you to reject this ill-conceived peace plan and instead reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Congress must use its voice to stand firmly with our ally. We must continue to provide vital intelligence sharing and weapons supplies to Ukraine, ensuring they can defend themselves against Russian aggression.
Stand with Ukraine, honor our commitments, and protect the future stability of Europe and our NATO alliance
