I am writing to strongly urge you to protect Mexican gray wolves and oppose any effort to remove or weaken their protections under the Endangered Species Act. I am deeply concerned by reports that the Trump administration is directing a review of the Mexican gray wolf’s endangered status. These wolves have already been pushed to the brink of extinction and remain one of the rarest subspecies of gray wolf in North America. Their recovery is still ongoing, and removing federal protections now could jeopardize decades of conservation work. Wildlife management decisions should be based on the best available science and the long-term recovery of the species, not political pressure to make it easier to kill protected wildlife. Ranching concerns deserve serious attention, but those conflicts should be addressed through proven coexistence measures, compensation programs, livestock-management practices, and other nonlethal strategies rather than by weakening the Endangered Species Act. Mexican gray wolves are a native part of the Southwest and play an important ecological role in healthy ecosystems. A species that has required intensive reintroduction and conservation efforts should not lose protections before its recovery is secure and sustainable. I urge Congress to: Oppose any premature delisting or weakening of protections for the Mexican gray wolf. Ensure that Endangered Species Act decisions continue to be based on independent scientific evidence. Increase funding for Mexican gray wolf recovery, habitat protection, genetic diversity, and coexistence programs for ranchers. Strengthen protections against illegal killing and other threats to the remaining population. Conduct appropriate oversight of any attempt by the administration to interfere with science-based endangered species protections. The Endangered Species Act exists specifically to prevent vulnerable species from disappearing forever. Mexican gray wolves need more protection and continued recovery efforts, not fewer protections. Please stand up for science-based wildlife conservation and ensure that the Mexican gray wolf remains protected for future generations.
