Oppose the Russian Diesel Deal and Enforce the Law

To: Sen. McCormick, Rep. Smucker, Sen. Fetterman

October 19

Oppose the Trump administration's deal to ease sanctions and import Russian diesel. Congress explicitly banned Russian energy imports in 2022 to stop the U.S. from financing Putin's war, and that law is still on the books. The Treasury Department issued a waiver within minutes of Trump's social media announcement, with no congressional consultation and no explanation, as the law requires. Experts say this deal is unlikely to bring fuel prices down much, so the tradeoff is clear: Kremlin revenue in exchange for almost nothing. Meanwhile, Russia struck a power plant in Kharkiv hours after Trump declared an "energy ceasefire" that Zelenskyy said was news to him. The U.S. should not be funding a war that is actively killing Ukrainian civilians. A bipartisan group of six senators has already called on the administration to reverse course. Follow their lead, enforce the existing ban on Russian energy imports, and hold this deal to the legal standard Congress set.
