Congress must debate military action against Iran, uphold checks and balances

As citizens concerned about unchecked executive power, we urge Congress to assert its constitutional authority over matters of war. The president's unilateral decision to launch strikes against Iran raises serious questions about the separation of powers. While protecting national security is paramount, military action of this magnitude demands congressional oversight and approval as prescribed in the Constitution. We call on our representatives to uphold their duty by debating this issue thoroughly and, if necessary, rein in any overreach of presidential war powers through legislation. Failure to do so would undermine the system of checks and balances so vital to our democracy. The decision to go to war is one that belongs to the people through their elected representatives in Congress.
