Protect women's reproductive rights through federal legislation

To: Rep. Carson, Sen. Albers

November 11

The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade two years ago has drastically impacted access to abortion services across the country. Currently, 14 states have implemented total or near-total abortion bans, leaving millions of women without access to this essential healthcare service. While abortion rates have increased in states where it remains legal, this surge is directly attributable to people traveling across state lines to obtain care – a burden that disproportionately impacts low-income individuals and communities of color. The patchwork of harsh abortion restrictions enacted post-Dobbs has created a reproductive care desert, particularly in the South where Florida recently imposed a six-week ban before many women even know they are pregnant. These policies force women to carry pregnancies against their will, putting their health and futures at risk. Beyond abortion access, families are losing access to other reproductive services like IVF due to legal liability concerns. It is imperative that we act to protect women's constitutional rights and restore access to the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare. Enshrining these rights at the state level through ballot measures is a crucial first step. However, federal action will ultimately be needed to safeguard reproductive freedom nationwide. I urge you to prioritize legislation that will codify Roe v. Wade and prevent further erosion of women's fundamental rights over their own bodies and medical decisions.
