The SAVE Act could disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters, particularly married women who have taken their spouse's last name. Approximately 69 million married women in the United States may not possess a birth certificate that matches their current legal name, creating unnecessary barriers when attempting to register or update their voter registration. This requirement places an undue burden on these citizens and risks violating their constitutional right to vote. Rather than erecting obstacles, efforts should be made to safeguard and expand access to the democratic process for all eligible voters. Protecting the integrity of elections is vital, but the SAVE Act's documentation requirements are excessive given the rarity of non-citizen voting and the existing safeguards against such occurrences. A more measured approach that balances security with accessibility would better serve the interests of our nation and its citizens.
