An Open Letter

To: Sen. Hickenlooper

From: A verified voter in Boulder, CO

March 24

I am writing as your Colorado constituent, and I will be direct: I am asking you not to seek a second term in the United States Senate. You stood out among Democratic senators in supporting Trump’s disastrous cabinet appointees. Your repeated votes to confirm nominees from an administration that is actively dismantling constitutional rights and democratic norms is unacceptable. Voting to advance these confirmations is not bipartisanship — it is complicity. You have not stood up to Trump and his authoritarian regime as vigorously as the times call for. I am also deeply concerned about whose interests you are actually serving. You have accepted over $2.4M from the pro-Israel lobby over the course of your career — money that creates obligations to donors, not to the people of Colorado. Too often, you have prioritized the corporations and PACs that fund your campaigns over the constituents you were elected to represent. Colorado and the Democratic Party need new leadership. The old approach is no longer adequate to meet the moment we are in. Too many senators have clung to power long past the point of effectiveness, some until they died in office. That is not service — it is entrenchment. Colorado deserves a senator who brings fresh energy, new ideas, and a genuine commitment to fighting authoritarianism rather than accommodating it. Let someone younger lead.
