I am your constituent and I am horrified that there are two initiatives in our state that have apparently received enough signatures for the legislature to consider as laws as early as January 12th, 2026.
They are IL26-001, that addresses so-called restoration of parental rights and IL26-638 concerning removing transgender girls from sports.
These initiatives take away legal privacy protections for students and families.
They eliminate nondiscrimination policies for homeless, immigrant, neurodiverse and transgender students.
They empower broad parental opt-outs, silencing classroom conversations about race, gender and our real history.
Moreover, these initiatives pose safety risks for vulnerable students, including LGBTQ+ students and those seeking mental health support at school. The reality is that not all kids are safe at home, and they need to turn to a trusted teacher or school counselor for help, not have their safety net yanked out from under them.
The first requirement of IL26-638, banning transgender girls from sports, would be a genital inspection for ALL girls ages 11 and up in order to participate in athletics. How many girls would want to submit to this? This bill aimed at punishing trans girls will only remove all girls from sports.
As your constituent I want you to publicly denounce these initiatives and if they should come to a vote, I expect you, my representative, to vote against them.
