I’m writing from Pennsylvania because I’m deeply concerned about the misleading portrayal of recent events in Los Angeles labeled as “riots.” I believe these narratives are being exaggerated to serve political agendas and are harmful to our civic discourse.
1. What’s actually happening
• These events stem from protests against federal ICE raids targeting undocumented immigrants—not random chaos or criminal insurrection .
• Viral images, such as the masked motorcyclist with a Mexican flag and foreign flags in protest crowds, are being leveraged as propaganda—intended to stoke fear and justify aggressive federal responses .
2. How the narrative is distorted
• Former President Trump described the situation as an “invasion” and “insurrectionist mobs,” while deploying the National Guard—with rhetoric aimed at escalating panic .
• Major news outlets report that, while some arrests and confrontations have occurred, overall the protests are focused and centered around immigration policy—not anarchic mayhem .
3. Why this matters
• Inflaming public fear can shift policy toward increased militarization and suppress protest rights—even when the underlying cause is a legal, organized demonstration.
• Mischaracterization of these events erodes trust in both our federal government and media institutions. Fair and accurate coverage is critical.
4. What I’m asking you to do
• Condemn misleading and inflammatory statements that brand community-driven protests as “riots.”
• Support accountability for any federal or state response that inappropriately uses military force to interfere with civil demonstrations.
• Promote transparency in federal operations (e.g., ICE and National Guard actions), ensuring proper oversight and justification for deployment to domestic protests.
• Encourage media literacy through support for fact-checking efforts and resources to help constituents verify sources and claims.
Thank you for your attention to this issue. I urge you to speak out against intentional distortions of protest movements and hold decision-makers accountable for inflaming political tensions.
