I'm asking you to investigate Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth's decision to hire his personal lawyer to a top Department of Defense position while that lawyer continues working with other clients. This creates obvious conflicts of interest that compromise the integrity of our national security apparatus.
Rep. Jason Crow raised these concerns during a recent congressional hearing, and Hegseth's evasive responses only deepened my alarm. When the Secretary of Defense hires someone who is simultaneously his personal legal counsel and a Defense Department official, we have no way to know whether decisions are being made in the interest of national security or personal protection. This arrangement undermines public trust in civilian oversight of the military.
The Defense Department handles classified information, procurement decisions worth billions, and personnel matters affecting millions of service members and their families. We cannot afford leadership that blurs the line between personal interests and public duty. I expect you to demand full transparency about this hire, including disclosure of all clients this lawyer continues to represent and a clear explanation of how conflicts will be managed.
