I am writing as your constituent to express my strong opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (S.128). While I fully support efforts to protect the integrity of our elections, this bill poses a serious threat to the voting rights of millions of eligible Americans.
By requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, this bill would create unnecessary and burdensome barriers for eligible voters—particularly women, low-income individuals, and older Americans. An estimated 69 million women who have legally changed their last name after marriage may not have a birth certificate that matches their current legal name. Under this legislation, many of these women could be disenfranchised simply due to a mismatch in documentation, despite being fully eligible to vote.
This proposal would also disproportionately affect communities who already face challenges in accessing vital documents, including rural voters, people of color, naturalized citizens, and those who were born at home or in states with poor record-keeping practices.
The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy. We should be working to expand access to the ballot, not restrict it under the guise of “safeguards” that solve a virtually non-existent problem of noncitizen voting.
I urge you to oppose S.128 and instead support measures that promote voter participation, streamline registration processes, and protect every eligible American’s right to vote.
Thank you for your time and for your continued service.
