Urge Bipartisan Action to Safeguard Free Speech Against FCC Overreach
To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Chu, Sen. Padilla
From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA
September 19, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern over recent threats made by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr against ABC's broadcast license. These actions represent a dangerous overreach of government power and a direct threat to our First Amendment rights. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate bipartisan action to protect free speech and prevent such abuses of power.
Senator Ted Cruz, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which oversees the FCC, has rightly called Chairman Carr's threats "unbelievably dangerous." On his podcast "Verdict with Ted Cruz," the Senator likened Carr's rhetoric to "mafioso" tactics, highlighting the severity of this situation. Cruz warned that allowing the government to police speech could have far-reaching consequences, potentially being used against conservatives when political power shifts.
Chairman Carr's comments on a far-right podcast, where he threatened action against broadcasters who don't "find ways to change conduct" the government deems disagreeable, are particularly alarming. This kind of government intimidation of media outlets strikes at the heart of our democratic values and must be addressed swiftly and decisively.
While we may not always agree with the content broadcast by networks like ABC, the principle of free speech must be protected for all. As Senator Cruz pointed out, what might feel satisfying to use against one's opponents today could easily be turned against us tomorrow. This is not a partisan issue, but a fundamental American value that requires bipartisan defense.
I respectfully request that you work across the aisle to:
1. Investigate Chairman Carr's threats and hold hearings if necessary.
2. Introduce legislation to strengthen protections for broadcasters against government intimidation.
3. Reaffirm the FCC's commitment to upholding First Amendment rights in media.
The integrity of our democratic discourse depends on a free and unfettered press. Please act now to ensure that government officials cannot use their positions to threaten or silence voices they disagree with. Our Constitution and our values demand nothing less.
