History Cannot Be Rewritten: January 6 Was an Insurrection
To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz
From: A constituent in Leander, TX
May 27
The events of January 6, 2021, were not a peaceful protest. They were a violent assault on American democracy, carried out in broad daylight for the entire world to witness. Congress must not allow history to be rewritten, whitewashed, or erased for political convenience. On that day, a mob of insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election. They smashed windows, breached barricades, hunted lawmakers through the halls of Congress, assaulted police officers, and openly called for the execution of elected officials. Chants of “Hang Mike Pence” echoed through the Capitol grounds while gallows were erected outside. Members of Congress (YOU included) were forced to flee for their lives. Officers protecting the Capitol were beaten, crushed, sprayed with chemicals, and traumatized while defending this nation’s seat of government. These are not opinions. These are facts documented through video footage, sworn testimony, court records, law enforcement reports, and the very words of the attackers themselves. Now, there are people within the current Administration and political leadership attempting to pretend this violence never happened, or worse, to portray those responsible as victims or patriots. This is a blatant lie to the American people. It is an insult to every officer who bled defending the Capitol. It is an insult to every public servant forced into hiding that day. And it is an insult to the Constitution itself. Democracy cannot survive if truth becomes optional. Congress has a duty to defend the historical record and reject any effort to sanitize political violence. You must publicly and forcefully acknowledge the reality of January 6 and condemn every attempt to erase it from our national memory. Future generations deserve the truth, not propaganda crafted to protect political egos and extremist movements. Silence and cowardice only empower those willing to attack democracy again. Americans watched the Capitol fall under siege with our own eyes. We saw Confederate flags carried through the halls of Congress. We saw police officers assaulted. We saw lawmakers barricaded in fear. No amount of political spin can erase what happened. Do your job. Defend the Constitution. Protect the truth. Reject the dangerous rewriting of January 6 before the foundations of this democracy are damaged beyond repair. Fight for America before it’s too late. Please.
