Congress Should Meet Its Own Work Requirements

To: Sen. Capito, Sen. Justice, Rep. Moore

From: A constituent in Buckhannon, WV

September 18

SNAP recipients must document 80 hours of work or approved activity each month to keep food assistance. Meanwhile, the House has eliminated 24 legislative days this year and just left Washington after only seven workdays following its summer recess. If congressional Republicans applied their own standards to themselves, they wouldn’t qualify for SNAP. You collect a six-figure taxpayer-funded salary—with generous benefits—while cutting food assistance, attacking struggling families, and repeatedly sending yourselves home. So spare us the lectures about laziness and “welfare queens.” Congress has made it abundantly clear who expects taxpayers to fund a lifestyle without requiring the work. We are documenting every vote, every cut, and every hypocritical excuse. There will be political and electoral accountability. If you cannot meet the standards you impose on hungry Americans, you have no business representing us.
