I urge you to bring the confirmation of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) nominee and current Chair Lauren McFerran to the Senate floor immediately. While more and more workers are organizing for living wages, health and safety on the job, and dignity at work, corporations such as SpaceX and Amazon have gone so far as to challenge the legitimacy of the NLRB – the only neutral arbiter of labor disputes. It is within your power to seat Board members that would issue fair decisions, particularly as anti-worker forces are preparing to step up their attacks on unions, workers, and immigrant rights. If we want to close the inequality gap, the federal government must protect workers’ rights, codified in Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act, to organize and bargain collectively. However, workers cannot carry out these rights unless the NLRB is fully funded and operational. If these nominees aren’t confirmed, the Trump administration will fill the vacancies with anti-worker board members, undermining workers’ belief in labor protections and our government. Our judicial system is already facing two dozen challenges to the NLRB’s constitutionality, brought by union-busting corporations who want to operate above federal labor law. The combination of already weak labor law, coupled with corporations’ open flouting of the rules, is subverting our democracy. You can stand with workers and seat Chair McFerran at the NLRB by bringing her confirmation to the Senate Floor without further delay. This Congress still has an opportunity to promote good jobs and rekindle trust in our democracy by considering the pressing needs of working people as you prioritize what to bring to the Senate floor in the coming weeks.
