Block the SCREEN act

To: Rep. Fitzpatrick, Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Lansdale, PA

August 4

The similar bill in the United Kingdom should tell us everything we need to know about why the SCREEN act is a bad idea. Firstly, automated identify verification does not work; it is trivial to create and submit fake identification. Secondly, it wrongly prevents legitimate users from accessing online materials; there are a variety of reasons why both ID scanning and age estimation can fail. Thirdly, it is an unreasonable invasion of privacy; I can tell you as a software engineer that we cannot rely on these service providers to effectively protect the sensitive information submitted to them. This bill is an incompetent, ill-conceived half-measure. Block this bill and insist on involving actual online safety experts in drafting a new one.
