The U.S. government has an ethical and legal obligation to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador by immigration authorities. Multiple federal courts, including the Supreme Court, have ruled that his deportation was unlawful and ordered the administration to bring him back to the United States. Defying these court orders undermines the rule of law and due process that are core principles of American democracy. The administration's refusal to comply with the judiciary's rulings sets a dangerous precedent of executive overreach. Mr. Abrego Garcia's continued detention in El Salvador, against his will and in violation of his constitutional rights, is an injustice that must be swiftly remedied. The U.S. government should make every effort to secure his immediate repatriation and compensate him for the trauma and disruption caused by this egregious error. Furthermore, the allegations that Mr. Abrego Garcia is affiliated with criminal gangs remain unsubstantiated. Punishing him based on unproven claims would be a miscarriage of justice. The humane and lawful course is to return this U.S. resident to his home in Maryland without further delay. Upholding the constitution and human rights must take precedence over political considerations.
