The Supreme Court's recent 5-4 decision undermines the Clean Water Act, making it easier for cities to discharge untreated sewage into bodies of water that serve as sources of drinking water. This poses a severe public health risk by allowing raw sewage to potentially contaminate drinking supplies. Justice Amy Coney Barrett rightly pointed out the court's "puzzling" conclusion lacks substantiation, as allowing sewage pollution defies basic logic and environmental protections. Decisive congressional action is urgently needed to explicitly prohibit the discharge of raw sewage into water sources used for drinking, safeguarding public health and upholding the Clean Water Act's intent to ensure clean and safe water for all Americans.
