invoke Section Four of the 25th Amendment

To: Sen. Murray, Rep. DelBene, Sen. Cantwell

From: A constituent in Kirkland, WA

April 7

It is time to invoke Section Four of the 25th Amendment and remove President Donald Trump from office. On Easter Sunday, the President of the United States posted a profanity-laced threat on social media telling Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on power plants and bridges — civilian infrastructure. He ended the post with "Praise be to Allah." Days earlier, he posted that "a whole civilization will die tonight" in apparent reference to potential military action. These are not the words of a stable commander-in-chief. They are the words of a man who should not have his finger near a nuclear trigger. The 25th Amendment exists precisely for moments like this. Section Four gives the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet the authority to declare the President unable to discharge the duties of his office. Congress then has the power to affirm that declaration by a two-thirds vote in both chambers. I understand the political obstacles. I know that Vice President Vance and the Cabinet are Trump loyalists. But I am asking you to use the full weight of your office and your voice to demand action — to publicly call on the Cabinet to fulfill their constitutional duty, and to make clear that Congress stands ready to act if they do. History will not forgive silence. The 25th Amendment was written for exactly this moment. Please use it.
