Don’t deploy. Don’t comply with Trump’s occupation of American cities.
To: Gov. Green
From: A constituent in Kula, HI
October 24
I am writing to express my deep appreciation for your principled stance in resisting the deployment of our state's National Guard for federal operations that threaten the rights and safety of American citizens.
Across the country, we’ve witnessed troubling instances where National Guard troops and federal agents have been used in ways that undermine civil liberties and escalate tensions. In Los Angeles, peaceful demonstrators were met with tear gas and rubber bullets. In Chicago, a pastor was struck with pepper balls while praying. In Washington, D.C., a National Guard vehicle collided with a civilian car, sending the driver to the hospital. These events are deeply concerning and highlight the dangers of using military force against our own communities.
President Trump’s recent rhetoric and actions—describing American cities as “training grounds” for military operations and deploying troops without state consent—represent a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism. The law is clear: National Guard units are under the control of state governors, and it is within your authority to refuse deployments that do not serve the interests or safety of your constituents.
Your leadership in standing firm against these federal overreaches is commendable. At a time when many have chosen compliance over courage, your decision to protect our state’s autonomy and uphold democratic principles is a beacon of hope.
I urge you to continue defending our communities from any attempts to use state forces as instruments of fear. Your actions matter—not just to our state, but to the nation as a whole.
Thank you for your service and leadership.
