Shut Down ICE Detention Now — Brutality Against Jose Mejia Hernandez Demands Action

To: Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

August 19

Shut down ICE detention operations immediately. The brutalization of Jose Mejia Hernandez — a man walking to work at 6:30 a.m. when agents sped up on him, forced him to run, then apprehended him so violently he was hospitalized with a brain bleed — is not an isolated incident. It is a pattern. The full account is documented here: https://substack.com/@eyesonice/note/c-317370594 Mejia Hernandez was held for three days with almost no contact with his family and is now shackled with an ankle monitor actively preventing him from receiving the medical care he needs. The officers responsible have faced zero consequences. That impunity is the policy. What is happening in these detention facilities echoes some of the darkest chapters in history, when governments systematically dehumanized people they deemed undesirable. We have too much evidence to look away. Call for an immediate investigation into this case, push to remove the conditions blocking his medical treatment, and take concrete legislative action to defund and dismantle ICE detention operations. Stop this now.
