I am writing to urge you to reject any further Continuing Resolutions and to support meaningful oversight and accountability measures for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Continuing Resolutions perpetuate dysfunction and prevent Congress from exercising its constitutional duty to set spending priorities through regular order. They lock in previous spending levels without allowing for necessary adjustments, prevent new programs from starting, and create uncertainty for federal agencies and the communities they serve. After years of governing by CR, it is time for Congress to pass full appropriations bills that reflect current needs and priorities.
Additionally, I am deeply concerned about ICE's enforcement activities and the need for stronger congressional oversight. Recent reports of immigration enforcement actions have raised serious questions about due process protections, family separation, and the targeting of individuals without criminal records. These enforcement priorities affect communities across the country, including families who have lived and worked here for years.
ICE operates with a budget exceeding eight billion dollars annually, yet lacks sufficient accountability mechanisms to ensure its actions align with constitutional protections and community safety priorities. Congress has the authority and responsibility to establish clear guidelines for enforcement priorities, ensure transparency in detention practices, and require regular reporting on the impact of enforcement actions on families and communities.
I ask that you take a firm stand against any Continuing Resolution that would extend current funding without addressing these critical issues. Instead, support appropriations legislation that includes specific accountability measures for ICE, establishes clear enforcement priorities focused on genuine public safety threats, and ensures due process protections for all individuals. Keep up the good work in standing firm on these principles.
Your constituents deserve a government that functions through proper legislative process and immigration enforcement that respects both the rule of law and human dignity.
