Investigate Widespread Abuse of Flock Cameras
To: Mayor Anderson
From: A verified voter in Kalamazoo, MI
May 2
I'm asking you to launch an investigation into the abuse of Flock surveillance cameras in our community. These automated license plate readers are being deployed without adequate oversight, and residents deserve answers about how our data is being collected, stored, and shared.
Flock cameras capture the movements of every driver, creating a detailed record of where we go and when. Law enforcement agencies are accessing this data without warrants, and there's no transparency about who else might have access. This dragnet surveillance treats every resident like a suspect and violates our reasonable expectation of privacy.
Other jurisdictions have discovered serious problems with these systems, including data breaches, mission creep, and discriminatory enforcement patterns. Flock's own employees have been caught watching live camera feeds for personal reasons, as documented at https://jasonhunyar.substack.com/p/why-are-flock-employees-watching-720. We need to know if similar abuses are happening here. I want you to examine who authorized these contracts, what safeguards exist to prevent misuse, and whether our police department is sharing data with federal agencies or private companies.
The public has a right to know how we're being surveilled. Please commit to a full investigation and public hearings on Flock camera use in our area.
