An Open Letter
To: Gov. Mills
From: A constituent in South Portland, ME
March 1
I am writing to request that your office direct the appropriate state law-enforcement authorities, including the Attorney General and State Police, to review the recently released federal investigative records related to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates to determine whether any crimes within the jurisdiction of our state were committed or facilitated here. It is especially important that our state take action, since the DOJ has taken action to obscure the facts.
Federal court proceedings and investigative releases have documented that Epstein and his network transported victims across state and international lines and used multiple residential and travel locations. Because criminal jurisdiction can attach wherever recruitment, transportation, abuse, conspiracy, or facilitation occurred, it is important to determine whether any individuals, properties, financial transactions, or transportation routes connected to our state are identified in those records.
If any such nexus exists, I respectfully request that your office ensure a full and independent review and, where supported by evidence, pursue appropriate state criminal investigations or refer matters to the relevant prosecutorial authorities.
Public confidence in the rule of law depends on the consistent and impartial enforcement of state criminal statutes. A clear statement confirming that these records are being reviewed for any connection to our state would help assure residents that this responsibility is being taken seriously.
