I write today to urge the IMMEDIATE return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly and illegally deported from his home in Maryland and sent to a horrific prison camp in El Salvador. Kilmar - like most of the people deported to that prison - has no criminal record. Kilmar has a work visa issued by the DHS. He has done nothing wrong, and yet he was taken from his family and sent to hell on earth. Human Rights Watch says it is not aware of any prisoner who has ever been released from the infamous CECOT, where Kilmar has been sent. At this point, given the hellish conditions this facility is known for, how can we be sure Kilmar is even still alive?
As if the tragedy of a man being torn from his wife and children and sent to a foreign prison camp is not awful enough, this has grave implications for the state of our Republic. The Trump Administration has been ordered by no less than the Supreme Court of the United States to see to it that Kilmar is returned. The Administration refuses, coyly pretending their hands are tied because they have given their victims over to the hands of a foreign government. I refuse to believe that this administration - which even now is planning the seizure of Greenland from the country of Denmark and has urged Romania to release self-admitted rapist and sex trafficker Andrew Tate - suddenly is frightened off by the idea of national sovereignty. The Trump Administration is illegally imprisoning people, and it does not care. Trump even indicated during a meeting with the President of El Salvador that he would even deport US citizens to these prison camps.
I will not be a peaceable subject of a king who feels he can do anything he likes. We are a nation of laws. This President does not respect laws, and he must be brought to justice. I urge the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia - if he is still alive - and the impeachment and conviction of President Donald Trump for his crimes against the Constitution and humanity.
