Urge US Recognition of Palestinian Statehood for Humanitarian Reasons

To: Sen. Hurtado, Gov. Newsom, Asm. Bains

From: A constituent in Bakersfield, CA

September 22, 2025

I am writing to urge you to support the recognition of Palestine as a state by the United States. This action is not only a moral imperative but also aligns with growing international consensus and could contribute significantly to humanitarian relief in the region. Recent developments have seen several European nations, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, recognizing Palestinian statehood. France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta are poised to follow suit. This shift in international policy is occurring against the backdrop of Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis. Over 145 UN member states already recognize a Palestinian state. By joining this growing majority, the United States can play a crucial role in strengthening the case for a ceasefire within international structures and potentially lead to a diplomatic upgrade for Palestine in future negotiations. Critics argue that recognition alone is insufficient. However, it is a vital step that could pave the way for more concrete actions. Some European countries are already considering practical steps and sanctions against Israel alongside recognition. By recognizing Palestine, the US would signal its commitment to a two-state solution and potentially influence Israel's actions in the region. Public and political opinion has shifted significantly since 2023. Recognizing Palestine as a state would align US policy with this evolving global perspective and demonstrate our nation's dedication to human rights and international law. I understand there may be concerns about this being perceived as a "reward for terror," as some have claimed. However, it's crucial to distinguish between recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people and condoning violence. Recognition could actually serve as a stabilizing force, providing Palestinians with a stronger foundation for peaceful negotiation and reducing the appeal of extremist elements. The humanitarian situation in Gaza demands urgent action. US recognition of Palestine could be a powerful catalyst for peace negotiations and provide a framework for addressing the dire needs of civilians caught in the conflict. I implore you to advocate for US recognition of Palestinian statehood. This bold step could save lives, promote stability, and reaffirm America's role as a leader in pursuing just and peaceful resolutions to global conflicts.
