Immediate Action Required to Protect NATO and Greenland

To: Sen. Moody, Rep. Mills, Sen. Scott

January 21

I am writing as a deeply alarmed constituent to demand immediate congressional action to prevent the President from taking any military action in or against Greenland. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, which is a NATO ally. The defense of Greenland is fully integrated into the NATO framework, and the strength of NATO is essential to the security of the United States and the entire transatlantic community. Public threats by the President to “take” Greenland by force or “one way or the other” are not only reckless but also constitute direct threats against a NATO ally. Such threats undermine the very foundation of the North Atlantic Treaty, which is built on the principle of collective defense. Any use or serious preparation to use force against Greenland or Denmark by the United States would create a profound crisis within NATO. This could effectively destroy the alliance, which has been the cornerstone of Western security for over seventy years. The collapse or weakening of NATO would directly benefit adversaries such as Russia and China, who are eager to exploit any divisions among Western nations, especially in the strategically important Arctic region. It is vital that the United States uphold its commitments to NATO and demonstrate unwavering support for our allies. It is also important to recognize that the United States’ international reputation has already suffered significant damage as a result of recent actions by the President, as well as the lack of decisive response from Congress. Our credibility as a reliable partner has been called into question, and our leadership on the world stage has been undermined. Restoring trust in the United States requires immediate and principled action from our elected representatives. Therefore, I urge you to take the following actions without delay: - Publicly condemn any threat of the use of force against Greenland or Denmark. - Support and introduce legislation that expressly prohibits the use of U.S. armed forces against NATO allies unless there has been an armed attack on the United States and Congress has specifically authorized such action. - Demand a thorough investigation, including hearings and subpoenas, into any planning, legal opinions, or directives related to potential military action concerning Greenland. - Make it clear that threatening a NATO ally with armed force is incompatible with the presidential oath of office and, if pursued, constitutes grounds for impeachment. The United States must strengthen NATO, not undermine it. I expect you to act swiftly to ensure that no president can unilaterally endanger our alliances, our security, or our values. The future of NATO and the safety of the free world depend on strong and principled leadership from Congress. Now is the time to repair the damage to our international reputation and reaffirm our commitment to our allies and the rule of law.
