I’m writing to urge you to oppose any attempt by the Trump administration to privatize or sell off federally held student loans. This scheme would turn the futures of millions of Americans into a Wall Street commodity—at a time when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been gutted and borrowers are more vulnerable than ever.
Selling federal student loans to private investors would destroy vital safeguards like income-driven repayment, forgiveness programs, and hardship relief. Once these loans are in private hands, profit—not fairness—will drive collection practices. Borrowers will face aggressive tactics, rising interest rates, and a resurgence of the same predatory behavior that helped crash the economy in 2008.
Balancing budgets is one thing; selling out Americans striving for a better life is another. Strong nations invest in their people. We can encourage fiscal responsibility without turning education debt into a playground for speculators chasing quarterly returns.
Congress must act now to block any privatization of federal student loans, restore full consumer-protection oversight, and ensure higher education remains a ladder up—not a lifelong trap. Protecting hardworking Americans from exploitation should never be a partisan issue.
