I am writing urgently in light of recent media reports indicating that former President Trump has requested U.S. military contingency planning that could include the forcible takeover of Greenland, a territory of Denmark and a NATO ally.
Even if these reports involve “contingency” planning rather than finalized orders, the implications are extraordinary. Any preparation for military action against the territory of a NATO member — without congressional authorization — would be unconstitutional, illegal under international law, and catastrophic for the NATO alliance itself.
I urge you to immediately:
1. Demand a classified briefing clarifying whether any such military plans have been requested or drafted
2. Publicly reaffirm Congress’s sole authority to authorize war
3. Take all necessary steps to block funding or authorization for any military action against Greenland
The United States cannot afford to sleepwalk into an action that would permanently damage NATO, destroy U.S. credibility, and violate the Constitution. This matter requires immediate congressional intervention.
