An Open Letter
To: Rep. Suozzi
From: A constituent in Glen Head, NY
July 2
I'm writing as a constituent who is fed up.
You built a reputation as a Democrat willing to work across the aisle, and there's a place for that. But lately it feels less like principled moderation and more like punching left for the sake of headlines. Two days after Democratic voters in New York chose their nominees, you were out front organizing a pledge that essentially told those same voters their choice was suspect. That's not a message to Republicans. It's a message to your own party, delivered right when unity actually mattered.
Blaming the 2024 loss on transgender kids playing sports was beneath you. It wasn't a courageous truth-telling moment. It was borrowing a Republican talking point and aiming it at one of the smallest, most vulnerable groups in the country, because it was politically convenient.
And when it came to actual votes, joining Republicans on the Laken Riley Act, then joining them again to censure a colleague for protesting Trump on the House floor, I don't see triangulation. I see someone more interested in being seen as reasonable by people who will never vote for you than in standing with the party and the voters who put you in office.
I don't need you to fall in line with every progressive priority. I need you to stop treating distancing yourself from Democrats as a governing strategy. Show me you're fighting for this district, not auditioning for cable news.
I expect better from my representative.
