Public education is crucial for fostering strong communities, reducing inequalities, and strengthening our democracy. However, the proposed voucher program in SB 0503/HB 1183 would divert up to $141.5 million in taxpayer funds away from public schools to fund private education for a few students. This diversion of resources from an already underfunded public system is deeply concerning. Private schools participating in voucher programs are not obligated to follow the same academic, accountability, and governance standards as public schools. They can also discriminate against students based on religion, LGBTQ+ status, disabilities, and other characteristics – violating principles of inclusion and equity. Additionally, the bill contains anti-immigrant provisions that discriminate against undocumented students and families, contravening their constitutional right to public education. Instead of privatizing education through vouchers, we should focus on improving and adequately funding public schools for all children. Diverting resources and discriminating against vulnerable groups sends a message that we are giving up on public education and leaving many students behind. I urge you to oppose SB 0503/HB 1183 and prioritize strengthening our public school system to benefit all Tennessee students equitably.
