An Open Letter
To: Rep. Gottheimer
From: A constituent in Township of Washington, NJ
November 24
I would urge you to reconsider passing the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act. While addressing tax issues for Americans wrongfully detained abroad is important, terminating the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed "terrorist supporting" is an overreach that could undermine vital nonprofit work. Tax-exemption allows nonprofits, even in affluent areas, to provide crucial services, advocacy, and support to communities in need. Revoking this status should have higher evidentiary standards and due process protections. The negative impacts on civil society outweigh any perceived benefits of this provision. I encourage exploring alternative approaches that uphold democratic values and do not jeopardize the ability of nonprofits to operate effectively.
