Investigate and stop Todd Blanche’s criminal activity

To: Rep. Goldman, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

June 23

I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the appointment of Todd Blanche as Attorney General of the United States. My concerns are not rooted in partisan disagreement. They arise from a growing pattern of conduct that suggests the Department of Justice is being transformed from an independent law enforcement institution into a mechanism for protecting the political interests of the President and those closest to him. First, I am deeply troubled by reports that Mr. Blanche has resisted complying with a federal judge’s demand that he certify the Administration is no longer pursuing what critics have characterized as a politically motivated legal pressure campaign. Regardless of one’s political views, compliance with lawful judicial orders is a cornerstone of our constitutional system. An Attorney General who appears unwilling to provide clear assurances to a federal court raises serious questions about respect for judicial authority and the separation of powers. Second, I am alarmed by reports of a confidential agreement that allegedly commits the federal government to refrain from pursuing legal action against Donald Trump, members of his family, or his business interests, both now and in the future. If accurate, such an arrangement would strike at the very heart of the principle that no individual is above the law. The Department of Justice exists to enforce the law impartially, not to grant permanent immunity to politically connected individuals. Taken together, these developments create the appearance of a two-tiered system of justice: one for ordinary Americans and another for those who occupy positions of power. Even the perception of such an arrangement is profoundly damaging to public confidence in our institutions. The Attorney General serves the Constitution and the American people, not the President personally. Any nominee whose recent conduct raises substantial questions about independence, impartiality, and fidelity to the rule of law deserves the most rigorous scrutiny possible. I urge you to examine these matters thoroughly, demand complete transparency regarding any agreements affecting the legal exposure of the President, his family, or his businesses, and oppose any effort that would further erode the independence of the Department of Justice. The continued health of our constitutional system depends on the equal application of the law. Once that principle is abandoned, corruption ceases to be an isolated problem and instead becomes a governing philosophy.
