Oppose Public Lands Sale in SENR Bill

To: Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin, Rep. Pocan

From: A constituent in Madison, WI

June 18

I am writing to express my deep concern and strong opposition to the proposed Senate Energy & Natural Resources (SENR) budget reconciliation bill, which would make over 250 million acres of public lands eligible for sale. This legislation threatens the integrity of our nation's public lands, including local recreation areas, wilderness study areas, and critical wildlife habitats. Public lands are a cornerstone of American heritage, providing essential environmental, recreational, and economic benefits. Selling off these lands to private interests undermines conservation efforts, restricts public access, and prioritizes short-term financial gains over long-term sustainability. Additionally, the bill fails to provide safeguards ensuring that sold lands will be used for housing or public benefit. Instead, it sets up a system where lands could be resold for non-housing purposes after just ten years, opening the door to unchecked commercial development. I urge you to oppose this bill and advocate for policies that protect our public lands for future generations. Please stand with the millions of Americans who value these spaces and reject efforts to privatize them.
