The proposed "Defining Male and Female Act" would codify narrow, biological definitions of male, female, and related terms based solely on reproductive anatomy. This legislation fails to account for the lived experiences and identities of transgender and non-binary individuals. By strictly defining gender based on biological characteristics present at birth, it risks invalidating and discriminating against those who do not conform to traditional gender norms. We must recognize that gender exists on a spectrum, and an individual's gender identity may differ from the sex they were assigned at birth. Transgender and non-binary citizens deserve to have their identities respected and protected under the law. Narrowly defining gender disregards modern scientific understanding of gender as a complex interplay of biological, social, and psychological factors. I urge you to oppose this bill and instead work towards policies that promote inclusion, equal rights, and non-discrimination for all people, regardless of their gender identity or expression. Protecting the rights and dignity of trans citizens should be a priority. Discriminatory legislation like this act only serves to marginalize an already vulnerable community and undermines efforts towards a more just and equitable society.
